Who We Are
X Projection started as a duo in 1984 with Damon Summers and Andrew Leeds, on their first outing, taking part in a talent competition in West Mersea Essex, which the duo nearly didn't get to because of the sea covering the road leading to West Mersea in Essex, the car got taken away on the current, but luckily their got across! The duo went on to win the competition with their own composition, with local press publishing the win lead the duo to involve some other musician, including Dave Rivers, to join up to give the band a bigger sound. After six month slog of rehearsing and writing all the musicians decided to end the band but Damon and Dave carried on, Dave introduced Damon to Mark Sainsbury, and an exciting song writing duo were formed! Joined by Billy Sainsbury playing keys, and the best local drummer Tony Smy coming into the band the classic X Projection were formed. The band created a near hysteria at one of their first show at Clacton town hall, with young fans hanging of the balcony's (which was not allowed!), the show presented by Essex county council entertainment organiser Bob Russell.
Along with that came the album and many TV and radio appearances, working along side some of pops finest, some of which you can hear & see on this page.
The band broke up at the end of "90 due to musical differences, but some of the members worked on different projects together, the lead singer was chased by Gordon Carlton from CBS records to sign a solo contract, but after an exhaustive 3 ½ years turned it down for a bit of P&Q, the guitarist was writing and recording footie songs (strange!!!) and rest of the guys played and recorded with other bands around the country and abroad, but in "91 and then again in “94 the band were brought back together for a series of gigs up and down their native country - England.
X Projection were influenced by a lot of the Nu romantic bands that had gone before, but took it a stage further into more generalized pop, as David O' Donald (RCA) said, "...I think you sound like a cross between Wham and early Culture Club...", we didn't think so, but hey who were we to argue with an A&R executive!
